How to Play Fan Solitaire and Stack the Deck

Ready to spread out with Fan Solitaire? This solo card game uses a standard deck of 52 and lays it all out in a cool, fan-like setup. You deal the whole deck face-up into 18 piles: 17 piles of three cards each, fanned out so you can see every card, and one lone pile with the last card. Your mission is to build four foundation piles, one for each suit, starting with Aces and working up to Kings.

Here’s the deal: you can only move the top card of each fan. Shift it to a foundation if it’s next in line, or stack it on another fan’s top card if it’s one rank lower and the same suit, like a 5 of Spades on a 6 of Spades. No empty piles to fill here, so you’re working with what’s on the table, making every move count. It’s a straightforward, open-book game that’s perfect for a quick mental jog or a laid-back break.
